Interview – Jess

Why did you choose this career pathway?

I chose carpentry because my Dad was a builder, I grew up visiting the houses he built and developed a love of building. I started out cleaning bricks and pulling old nails out of timber for a bit of pocket money and over time I worked my way up to building walls and floors. I’m now doing a carpentry apprenticeship and loving every bit of it. No two days are the same, there’s always something new to do and learn.

What is your favourite task to complete at work?

It’s hard to pick my favourite, I know my least favourite is digging holes but there’s so many great things to do. It’s always good to get a floor down and I love standing up the walls and watching a house take shape so quickly. I recently got new drills so any chance to give them a go is exciting.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow this career pathway?

Do It! There’s so much pressure at the end of high school to go to university, I’ve had the opportunity to do both and I’d recommend becoming a tradie 9 times out of 10. The best thing you can do is give it a go, call a local builder, see if you can get some experience, even if it is just pulling old nails out, you’ll love it.
