Tradeswoman Profile – Emma (Programmed)

Proudly partnered with Tradeswomen Australia, Programmed is an organisation dedicated to creating equality across all their divisions and providing excellent opportunities and career progression for female apprentices. Apprentice Emma recently shared her story with us as to what it was like to work as an electrician apprentice for for Programmed.

Emma started her apprenticeship with Programmed 2 years ago.  She is currently a second year air-conditioning and refrigeration apprentice. After finishing year 10, Emma spoke with her dad and uncle whom inspired her to apply for a trade at Programmed.

Emma is based at Programmed’s Wollongong branch and works at works at various customer sites including Bluescope Steel and the University of Wollongong. Her day consists of installing air-conditioning and refrigeration units, finding faults and repairing the units.

Since commencing with Programmed Emma has gained skills and knowledge that she can carry out for the rest of her life and also teach others.  These skills include full installation and removal of air-conditioning units, maintenance and repairs of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and fault finding.

Safety is also very important to Emma and being one of the core Values at Programmed she knows that when she comes to work every day that she will leave to go home in the same state that she came to work in.

How did you go about deciding that you wanted to explore an apprenticeship?

“Pursuing a trade wasn’t something I was always interested in doing.  It came about when I was talking to my dad one day who has done a trade and he also works for Programmed.  I did a bit of research and found out that a trade was actually something I wanted to do.”

What is your career goal?

“I have always felt welcomed and supported by Programmed in every aspect.  After my apprenticeship my goal is to complete my electrical and go into leadership roles.”

What advice would you give young women who are considering a career at programmed?

“Do it. Go for it.  When I am working I feel as equal as anybody else.  I do the same work, I communicate the same.  It’s totally different to what everyone says.  Programmed looks after their workers really well and make us all feel comfortable and we all feel like a team.  There is always someone to talk to if you need anything and they are really supportive with everything that you do.”
